Lightning bolt from the Mountain Top

Man, being lost and ignorant, creates situations and events that will cause him pain, for the precise reason that he can FEEL his pain.
Being lost and ill, his pain is what he treasures because it is something familiar, so knows its scope of influence.  Unconsciously he will do everything he can in order to feel more pain as a substitute for feeling in control.  Stop seeking approval for who you are NOT.  You are not someone who needs approval; you are not someone who needs permission.

That stopped with grammar school.

We must, between periods of digging in the dark, endeavor always to transform our tears into knowledge. "[He] accordingly will conduct himself... more as a knower than as a sufferer." Schopenhauer
